The roofing industry, unfortunately, has a higher proportion of rogue traders than most other trades. Choosing the wrong contractor can result in substandard work, no insurance cover, and a complete lack of recourse if things go wrong. Here's how to protect yourself.
Check Insurance
Any roofing contractor working on your property must carry public liability insurance — at a minimum £2 million, ideally £5 million. Ask to see the certificate before work begins. Never allow an uninsured contractor on your roof.
Look for Accreditations
Reputable roofing companies will be members of recognised trade bodies such as the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) or TrustMark. Listing on Checkatrade or similar verified review platforms also provides a level of vetting.
Get Multiple Written Quotes
Always get at least three written, itemised quotations for any significant roofing work. Be wary of vague estimates — a professional contractor will specify the materials to be used, the scope of work, and the total price.
Never Pay a Large Upfront Deposit
A reputable roofing contractor will not ask for the majority of the payment upfront. Expect to pay a small materials deposit (10–20%) with the balance due on completion. Cash-in-hand and large upfront payment requests are serious red flags.
Insist on a Written Guarantee
Any quality roofing contractor will provide a written guarantee on both materials and workmanship. Ask for the specific duration and terms. Manufacturer-backed guarantees for flat roofing systems provide an additional layer of protection.
London Supreme Roofing meets all of the above criteria. We are fully insured, provide written guarantees, and are happy to supply references from past clients on request.
